Peatlands Park

Situated near the shores of Lough Neagh near Dungannon in Co.Tyrone, Northern Ireland Peatlands Park SAC is an area of lowland raised bog which is located in an extensive area of cut-over raised bog. As such Peatlands Park SAC represents one of the largest areas of degraded raised bog in Northern Ireland. It is also important for the unusual habitat bog woodland, where trees and bog species exist side by side.

Bog regeneration is occurring over large swathes of the site, and the bog woodland located here is considered to be one of the best in the UK. The bog has quaking areas, and is one of the very few sites in Northern Ireland to support Bog rosemary.

CANN Works

Over the lifespan of the project, the CANN team will be working on producing a Conservation Action Plan for Peatlands Park SAC, and generating an up-to-date habitat map for the site. These documents will both be used to inform conservation decisions and management strategies, with an overall aim to guide the site towards a favourable conservation status. On the ground conservation actions to be carried out to improve the environment and conservation status at Peatlands Park include the removal of invasive species (namely Rhododendron), habitat fencing, scrub eradication, and drain blocking. Very exciting Sphagnum moss restoration trials are taking place at Peatlands Park SAC as part of the CANN project. You can read more about them in our News section.

Species

Bog rosemary is a beautiful evergreen foliage which briefly flowers in pink to white blossoms during late spring. The species is in decline and is typically confined to central Britain and Ireland. Whilst this species bears a strong resemblance in appearance to the herb Rosemary, the two are not related. Bog rosemary should not be consumed as it lowers blood pressure and may cause respiratory problems amongst a number of other unpleasant side-effects.
